About Abu Dhabi

Marvel at Abu Dhabi’s growing skyline while discovering the emirate by land, air or sea, experience the authentic feel of the real Arabia while watching the sun set behind red sand dunes, play golf on any of six distinctly diverse golf courses, or savour local and international cuisine sensations.

Boasting three main regions – the UAE’s capital and its surrounds, Al Ain or the Eastern Region and Al Dhafra, the emirate is a destination of geographic diversity, where visitors can explore natural islands, vast deserts, modern cityscapes, rocky heights, cooling oases and pristine beaches.

Hallmarked by a cultural diversity and an intriguing mix of old and new, we have UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ground-breaking architectural icons, headline adrenaline attractions, award winning golf courses, luxury resorts and some of the region’s best shopping malls.

Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second most populous city of the United Arab Emirates (the most populous being Dubai), and also capital of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the UAE’s seven emirates. Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast.

People and Culture

Abu Dhabi has a diverse and multicultural society. The city’s cultural imprint as a small, ethnically homogenous pearling community was changed with the arrival of other ethnic groups and nationals.

This unique socioeconomic development in the Persian Gulf has meant that Abu Dhabi is generally more tolerant than its neighbours, including Saudi Arabia. Emiratis have been known for their tolerance; Christian churches, Hindu temples, and Sikh gurdwaras. The cosmopolitan atmosphere is gradually growing and as a result, there are a variety of Asian and Western schools, cultural centers and themed restaurants.

Abu Dhabi has a hot desert climate. Sunny blue skies can be expected throughout the year. The months of June through September are generally extremely hot and humid with maximum temperatures averaging above 38 °C (100 °F). During this time, sandstorms occur intermittently, in some cases reducing visibility to a few meters.

The cooler season is from November to March, which ranges between moderately hot to mild. This period also sees dense fog on some days. On average, January is the coolest month in the year, while August is the hottest.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Rising imperially from marvelously manicured gardens and noticeable from each of the bridges joining Abu Dhabi Island to the mainland, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque represents an impressive welcome to the city. Conceived by the first president of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed, and marking his final resting place, the mosque accommodates 41,000 worshipers and is one of the few in the region open to non-Muslims. It is considered to be the key site for worship in the country.
